The Forest Shed was the childhood hideaway of musician James Taylor. Located downslope from the family home, above a creek and beneath a canopy of mature oaks and beeches, the structure had fallen into significant disrepair. Originally built as a simple concrete slab with parged CMU walls and a lightweight timber roof clad in asphalt shingles, the shed had deteriorated to the point of structural failure.
The project stabilizes and restores the existing structure while maintaining its presence within the landscape. A new concrete bond beam reinforces the top of the CMU walls, while selected openings are supported with steel lintels and portals. The roof has been entirely rebuilt with a new timber structure and reclad in corrugated metal, providing long-term durability.
The intervention also reconfigures the relationship between the building and its surroundings. The entrance has been relocated to the creekside patio, allowing access along the long axis of the structure and reinforcing its orientation toward the landscape. Careful staging of the construction minimized impact on the site, preserving the character of the mature forest hillside.
